S3 Ep2: Holding Uncomfortable Conversations with Kids: The "Tuned In' Approach
Dr Tim Moore is an Associate Professor and the Deputy Director at the Institute of Child Protection Studies. He shares his love of storytelling with Patty Kikos and comical cautionary tales of ‘what not to do’ from his lessons as a youth worker. Tim’s passion for empowering adults to have ‘uncomfortable conversations’ to ensure young people have a voice inspired him to co-author the much anticipated Tuned In training modules released by NACPAN. We take a deep dive into all six components, which are an excellent resource for those working with groups of young people to help them ‘be safe and feel safe’.
ON listening to this episode, Kirrily’s takeaway is that we often talk about or hear people talking about keeping children safe, but what does this mean on the ground? Children can often be in a technically safe place but not necessarily feel safe. It can be confronting as adults to recognise this, especially when recent reports show that 40% of children are exposed to neglect or abuse before the age of 18.
40%
There is a lot of work ahead of us to help children not only be safe but feel safe.
Remember - for every one negative experience - children need five positive experiences to counteract the impact of that.
The most important message you can send to a kid is that the kid is loveworthy. We don’t need to make grand gestures - but focus on small steps daily.
It’s like the RAV challenge. Our RAVer’s have collectively taken over 1 Billion steps on the road to building communities where family violence no longer lives.
